Eat, Drink & Be Local is an Annual week-long celebration of local foods, farms and restaurants happening the 3rd week of June, 2015.   Support your community by visiting the farmers markets, eating at one of the many delicious local restaurants, and/or join in the fun at one of the local events being held.

How to Grow Your Own Veggies

As part of Eat Drink and Be Local week, join NC Cooperative Extension agents and Master Gardeners in our demonstration garden for this vegetable gardening fundamentals workshop. Participants will flow through five different gardening areas facilitated by different experts to learn about garden planning, site selection, composting, soil testing, mulching strategies, integrated pest management, varietal selection, and more.

As part of Eat Drink and Be Local week, join us for a FREE film screening of “Fixing the Future” at Carolina Theater in Hickory. This documentary follows David Brancaccio across America as he visits people and organizations that are reinventing their local economy through innovative approaches to create jobs and build prosperity. This event is co-hosted by the Footcandle Film Society.

 

 

Public Health Farmer’s Market Local Food Samples and Scavenger Hunt

Come out to the Public Health Farmers Market for special Eat Drink and Be Local activities. Abby Rowe from the CityFarm Project will be there giving out free samples of local produce and hosting a scavenger hunt for kids at the market.

Catawba Chamber of Commerce’s Schmoozapalooza will be at Tasting Tunes and Tomatoes at the Downtown Hickory Farmers Market! 50 local businesses will be set up at the market alongside local farmers to display their services and products. Come out to taste some local craft beer and wine, sample food, and enjoy live music from Secondhand Still.

This tour will be visiting three very different Catawba County farms, each with such a compelling story that you will certainly walk away with a different outlook on agriculture and its role in some of the biggest challenges facing human and environmental health. The tour will leave from the Extension Center at 8am. Limited space in carpool vehicles, but tour participants may drive themselves. Olde Hickory Station is hosting a Farm-to-Table Tasting where they will give away bite sized samples of food prepared using ingredients sourced from local farms. And all day, local farmers will receive a 10% discount on their meals (excluding alcoholic beverages)!
