Entertainment for the Hickory Community Theatre’s annual fundraiser, The Vacation Extravaganza, will be provided by Nathan Hefner and Ulysses Long. The event is being held at the Theatre on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 6:30 PM. With an act they call “Dueling Pianos,” both Long and Hefner are local favorites.
Hefner has been charming audiences all over the east coast for more than 15 years with his dazzling repertoire of music encompassing nearly 70 years of musical triumph. From the tranquil sounds of the early crooners to the edgier rockabilly of the 50’s and 60’s, when Hefner opens a number, his energy and vocal grace bring to life an age that has passed us by–if only for the duration of a song. His musical career began when the swinging brass of the big bands as well as the intimate sounds of the post W.W.II era captivated young Hefner. His appreciation of the music led him to begin singing publicly at age 3 and playing piano by age 5. Hefner was already performing for local events and various civic organizations by the age of 11.
Long is probably most recognized for his appearance on “America’s Got Talent” in 2012, where he advanced through several rounds of competition. People here were impressed by Ulysses well before 2012. He has been a familiar face in the local music scene for years, where his appearances include serenading patrons on Saturday evenings at Market on Main, entertaining seniors every Christmas at Heritage Place in Statesville and closing out the show the last four years at the Hickory Rotary Club’s annual fundraiser, “Rotarian Idol.” He says he got his start at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Taylorsville where his father directed the youth choir.
The Extravaganza, also known as “The Best Party in Hickory,” is an evening that includes plentiful food, drink, live entertainment, a silent auction and a $10,000 grand prize for a “dream” vacation. As of press time less than 20 tickets were still available.
The admission price for two is $100 which includes one entry to the drawing for the Grand Prize. Tickets may purchased by phone at (828) 327-3855 or at the theatre, 30 3rd ST NW Hickory NC 28601.
