Proceeds help support literacy by purchasing new library materials and funding programs, including author visits, workshops and summer reading for young people.

The three-day event includes a members-only sales opportunity on Thursday, with sales to the public on both Friday and Saturday.  Special bargain pricing will be available on Saturday.

The annual sale consists primarily of materials donated by the public, but deleted library materials will also be sold.  Customers may choose from paperback and hardback books, audio books and DVDs.

New or gently used materials may be donated at any library branch for the sale; however, the group does not accept VHS tapes, magazines, encyclopedias, “Reader’s Digest” collections or textbooks.  Badly worn, mildewed or outdated materials should not be donated.

Annual Friends memberships are priced at $5 per individual, $10 per family and $15 for businesses, including booksellers.  Memberships will be sold at the door.  The Friends group serves as a community liaison and support organization for the entire county library system.  The next meeting is at 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013  in Newton.

Popular restaurant icon Ronald McDonald will present a literacy program as part of the Catawba County Library System’s Summer Reading Program.

“It’s Book Time with Ronald McDonald!®” will be presented at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2013 at the Southwest branch in Mountain View and at 2 p.m. at the Conover branch; 2 p.m. on June 7 at the Claremont branch; 10 a.m. June 12 at St. Stephens; 10 a.m. June 13 at Maiden; 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26 at Sherrills Ford; and at 4 p.m. July 18 at the Main Library in Newton.  Due to limited space, pre-registration is encouraged at Maiden.

“It’s Book Time with Ronald McDonald!®” is a show that addresses the topic of reading in a fun and relevant way for elementary school students, teaching them to appreciate the value of books and the enjoyment that comes from reading.

Attendees are urged to come early for the best seats.  All ages are welcome, but the show is targeted at children in grades K-3.

Summer Reading is an annual literacy project that encourages young people to keep reading when school is not in session.

The City of Hickory and the Hickory Foundation YMCA are partnering together this summer to provide swim lessons to City of Hickory residents ages six months to adult.

Two sessions of lessons will be offered. Session one will be from June 3 through 13, 2013 and session two will be held From June 17 through 27, 2013.

The deadline to register for session one is May 27, 2013  and the deadline for session two is June 10, 2013.  Space is limited.

City of Hickory residents, who complete a Residency Verification Form, will be able to participate at no cost.

Residency verification forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Department Administrative Offices, the Highland Recreation Center, and the Ridgeview Recreation Center. Once a City resident has the verification form, they will register their child at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.

The group plays a fusion of classic rock, folk and pop music. Their touring credits include Walt Disney World, Charlotte Bobcats Arena, and Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Flutter-By Butterfly Habitat offers adults and children the unique opportunity to get an up close look at numerous species of live butterflies. This seasonal butterfly house will feature native North Carolina and semi-tropical varieties of butterflies.

Once visitors walk through the door of the Science Courtyard, they will be transported to a butterfly friendly environment filled with a variety of aromatic flora and a babbling brook.

Walking through the lush, vibrantly colorful surroundings, guests will discover an assortment of butterflies including Monarchs, Swallowtails, Buckeyes, Viceroys, Orange Barred Sulphur and Painted Ladies, just to name a few. Visitors will be amazed how delicate and beautiful these insects are, and enjoy the unique opportunity to feed these fluttering works of art

When visiting, guests should stop by the Flutter-By Butterfly Nursery. Once there, they will learn the lifecycle of the butterflies and see future inhabitants of the exhibit. As visitors examine the butterfly chrysalides within the nursery, they will notice the differences in their color, design and texture.

Since this is a living exhibit, no two visits to the Flutter-By Butterfly Habitat will be the same. Catawba Science Center suggests that butterfly enthusiast should come to the Science Center often and explore this ever changing exhibit before it floats off after Sunday, September 1, 2013.

Planned activities include Butterfly Garden Parties, Butterfly Lunches with CSC’s Lead Naturalist Bruce Beerbower, an evening program on Butterfly Gardening, For Photographer Only events and special field trips.
